Nokia OS2008 Beta for the N800

Nokia has released an official beta version of OS2008 1for the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. This release is mainly targeted to developers working on maemo 4.0 Chinook. Porting and developing applications for Chinook was already possible with the beta and final releases of the maemo SDK. This image allow developers to fine tune testing and performance on their Nokia N800 and get software virtually ready for the new Nokia N810 as well.

The OS2008 final release for the N800 is expected to come sometime in mid December.

OLPC sued for patent infringement in Nigeria

OLPC SuedA company called Lagos Analysis Corporation has sent out a press release announcing a patent infringement lawsuit against the One Laptop Per Child project. “The patent infringement lawsuit was filed on November 22nd, 2007 as a result of OLPC’s willful infringement of LANCOR’s Nigeria Registered Design Patent #RD8489 and illegal reverse engineering of its keyboard driver source codes for use in the XO Laptops.” The patent in question relates to physical multilingual keyboard technology.

LANCOR is seeking substantial damages as well as a permanent injunction to prevent OLPC from continuing to unlawfully manufacture, sell, distribute or offer for sale the XO Laptop, and any other products infringing on the RD8489 and using the illegally acquired keyboard driver source codes. Depending on the manufacturer and model of your mobile phone, you’ll be able to retrieve your contacts (SIM & phone), calls, messages, todos, calendar and system information. You can also create contacts, events, todos and messages or manage data backups. In addition you can use the bluetooth manager to access your mobile phone like a standard storage media or use the Gnome phone manager for realtime messaging.

Linux Based Ibiza PMP

Ibiza PMPHaier America is shipping a WiFi-enabled portable media player (PMP) based on Linux. The “Ibiza Rhapsody” has a 30GB hard drive, and is designed to work with the Rhapsody digital music service, AOL Video, and other digital content services. The Ibiza is said to “seamlessly” integrate wireless access, media playback, and Bluetooth audio capability (30GB model only). It also integrates an FM radio.

The 4.9-ounce (140-gram), 2.4 x 0.5 x 4.1-inch Ibiza is equipped with a 2.5-inch, 320 x 240-pixel QVGA LCD display with 65,000 colors. The battery provides three hours of video playback and over 10 hours for audio, says Haier. The device is said to support MPEG4, WMV, M4V, AVI, H.264, and MPG video files, and MP3, WMA, WAV, and AAC audio files.

Linus On Linux In 2008
